Maybe Someday - Book Review

Book Synopsis |
At twenty-two years old, Sydney is enjoying a great life: She’s in college, working a steady job, in love with her wonderful boyfriend, Hunter, and rooming with her best friend, Tori. But everything changes when she discovers that Hunter is cheating on her—and she’s forced to decide what her next move should be.

Soon, Sydney finds herself captivated by her mysterious and attractive neighbor, Ridge. She can't take her eyes off him or stop listening to the passionate way he plays his guitar every evening out on his balcony. And there’s something about Sydney that Ridge can’t ignore, either. They soon find themselves needing each other in more ways than one.

***********
'Maybe Someday' by Colleen Hoover was an okay read, but it wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped. One thing I'll say that stood out for me was how the author brought attention to the deaf community. I'm always interested in works like this that bring disability to light. People with impairments can and do lead regular lives, including finding and losing love, and novels with disabled characters should be the norm.
That said, apart from their romantic relationship, the characters did not evolve or grow in any other manner. It would have been great to see Sydney graduate college, or at least see both Ridge and her in a different setting outside of their apartments. Also, I didn't feel all that connected to Sydney (or Ridge, for that matter). We know little about Sydney other than what she told Ridge about herself. There should have been a scene or two outside of their relationship. And, why didn't Sydney have any friends? It seemed odd that she only had the one friend who ended up betraying her. She's in college - didn't she have course mates, at the very least? Bottom line is I didn't quite connect well with their romance, possibly because of the way it developed in the first place.
Overall, 'Maybe Someday' was a decent read. Writing style was really good, so there's no question about the talent.

Would I read another book by the author? Quite likely, albeit warily.
