The Uglies Series - A Quick Review

UGLIES SERIES SUMMARY

In Tally Youngblood’s world, looks matter. She lives in a society created to function with perfect-looking people who never have a chance to think for themselves. And she’s tired of it. First as an ugly, then a pretty, and finally a special, Tally takes down the social infrastructure. And then, a generation later, a world obsessed with fame and instant celebrity—and filled with extras—will reap the consequences.

-------------

The Uglies, Pretties, and Specials are different sets of people with distinctively different looks and ways of thinking. Everyone in the new world are naturally born as Uglies, and when they turn 16, they undergo a surgical transformation and are turned into Pretties, with gorgeous skin and eyes and endowed with everything else that makes them look pretty on the outside. The Specials are, well, special. They're like the FBIs and CIAs of the new city, but with more enhanced physical and mental abilities.

Ofcourse, as with most dystopian plots, we find out down the line that the new world system is majorly flawed with hidden and dangerous agendas, and thus begins the fight towards a revolution.

I'll say one of the many things I loved about the books were how the words 'bogus', 'bubbly' and 'icy' all had significant meanings as they kept being used repeatedly by the characters and the narrator.

One thing that stood out for me was the lack of character development or, should I say ‘follow-up’ for Tally’s parents. Her parents only show up in one scene in Book 1, and we never hear about them ever again. Not in Book 2 or Book 3. I found that quite odd, especially with everything that ended up happening to Tally, from running away to being captured, and other crazy adventures that followed. Where were her parents all the while? I couldn’t help but notice the big omission.

Although, as of this post, I'm yet to read the last book in the series, The Extras (which has a slightly different plot), it's been quite an enjoyable and 'bubbly' series so far. Glad I finally got to reading them🔥
